Goblin Valley State Park
Imagine this – an out of the world landscape filled with an army of “goblins” turned to rock stretching to the horizon! What the locals refer to as “goblins” are really “hoodoos” – strange looking, naturally artful, mushroom-shaped sandstone formations that can go up to heights of 100+ feet, and form labyrinths as far as the eye can see. Apparently, the goblin valley was first discovered by cowboys looking for lost cows. The area was eventually claimed by the state and converted into a park in 1964. It is en route to Capitol Reef and Escalante, and is just 101 miles from Moab, UT.
Goblin Valley hardly sees any visitors, with the lion’s share of the attention taken up by Canyonlands and Arches nearby. However, the goblin-like hoodoos here are unique and fun for all ages, and definitely worth the 2 hour drive.
